Behavior Modification
instead of Obedience Training

Behavior Modification or Obedience - What is the difference?

Far too often we see dogs that struggle with anxiety and fear. This fear can lead to aggression if not treated appropriately. In fact, most aggression stems from fear and not from dominance or protectiveness. These dogs come from loving and caring backgrounds as well as abusive and neglectful ones. Just as people can suffer from anxiety and fear, dogs can suffer from them too. The difference between people and dogs is that dogs need a translator to start on the road to recovery. Our certified trainers at ULPS can be just what these anxious and fearful dogs need.

Behavior modification is different from obedience training and offers a completely different set of services to address specific unwanted behaviors that obedience training alone cannot resolve or may even make worse. Through positive techniques based on current scientific studies, our trainers develop an individualized plan specific to the issues that each dog is facing. We use techniques such as counter-conditioning and desensitization. Our goal for every dog is to gradually take them from fearful and unsure to confident and happy. By improving the quality of life of the dog, we aim to improve the quality of life of the owner.

Our Behavior Modification Team offers:

  • Quirkys K9s class designed for dogs reactive on leash towards people or dogs
  • Private in-home appointments
  • Private in-facility appointments
  • Drop-off behavior modification
  • Drop-off socialization for fearful dogs

Signs and symptoms that indicate your dog may need Behavior Modification rather than Obedience

  • Barking
  • Lunging
  • Refusing to take their favorite treat
  • Growling
  • Snapping
  • Hiding
  • Ears pinned back
  • Shaking
  • Tail tucked
  • Stiff posture
  • Avoidance

Disclaimer: While seeing these things can be an indicator that your dog suffers from anxiety or fear, some may be misleading and it is best to consult a professional before labeling your dog with anxiety or aggression.

Going to the same vet for some 25 years and 2 dogs says something about quality, responsiveness, and the care they give my pet.

Padme always comes home happy and tired after her vacation at Bed and Biscuit.
